Canukshuks

There are three aspects to a Canukshuk.

Canukshuks contain six soapstone puzzle pieces. Add water to soften, then carefully remove the sand with a suitable tool (spoon or craft stick) to recover each of the soapstone pieces.

Solve the picture puzzle. Each soapstone puzzle is hand painted with an animal silhouette. The picture will be one of four designs; a bear, wolf, eagle or whale. Each is hand cut, so no two are exactly alike.

In addition, the pieces can also be stacked in a variety of ways to create an assortment of soapstone sculptures. Here are just a few.

Soapstone comes in a variety of colours, mostly greens and browns. Its main component, talc, is very soft which allows the stone to be easily cut and shaped. Used for thousands of years for cooking pots and bowls, it is also widely used for art work and has become synonymous with Inuit sculpture.
